Seven Sleep Habits That Support Healthy Aging
Evidence-aligned, realistic ways to improve sleep without miracle supplements.
Sleep often changes with age, but poor sleep should not automatically be accepted as inevitable. Consistent timing, daylight and a calmer evening can make a meaningful difference.
Anchor the morning first
Wake at roughly the same time each day and seek outdoor light in the morning. These cues help set the body clock more reliably than forcing an early bedtime when you are not sleepy.
Regular daytime movement also supports sleep, although intense exercise right before bed may be too stimulating for some people.
Reduce friction at night
Keep the room dark, quiet and comfortably cool. Build a short wind-down routine that does not depend on willpower.
- Limit late caffeine and large evening meals.
- Keep naps earlier and relatively brief.
- Put bright screens away before bed.
- Use the bed primarily for sleep.
Know when to ask for help
Loud snoring with breathing pauses, persistent insomnia, restless legs or severe daytime sleepiness deserve professional assessment. Sleeping pills and supplements can interact with medicines and may increase fall risk, so discuss them with a clinician or pharmacist.
